2014 Chevrolet Sonic – Fun, affordable and fuel-efficient

Bigger cars often take their place in the spotlight, leaving slightly less room for the smaller vehicles. This does not imply that we should ignore them, because, as the expression goes, “good things come in small packages.” The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Sonic is among the smallest of packages in the automaker’s lineup.

The 2014 Sonic is destined for consumers looking for a small, but fun car to zip around in. The vehicle must also offer good fuel economy ratings, and a price tag to appreciate. Buyers need not worry however, since the 2014 Sonic offers all of the above.

Consumers can choose between the sedan or hatchback version. The base MSRP for the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedan starts from only $13,995, whereas the hatchback model sells from $14,495. The 2014 Sonic, whether as a 4-door or a 5-door model, is very affordable.

This aspect is further increased when looking at the manufacturer’s consumption ratings. Chevrolet states the fuel economy to be 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, and 5.1 L/100km on the highway. These ratings are based on the top-notch sedan model, equipped with a 1.4-liter turbo engine, and a manual transmission. The 2014 Sonic sedan is clearly one fuel-efficient subcompact car.

The sedan model is available in three trim levels; the LS, LT and LTZ. Standard exterior features on the LS model include solar absorbing tinted glass, halogen headlights, and 15-inch wheels, to name a few. In addition, with the top LTZ trim, buyers can add fog lights, heated and power remote control/manual folding mirrors, a chrome beltline, a rear deck-lid mounted spoiler, and 17-inch wheels, among others.

Cruise control, remote keyless entry with a panic feature, a chrome shift knob and Bluetooth with audio system controls are available on the higher trim levels.

Under the hood, the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic sedan can be equipped with a choice of two engines. The first is a standard 1.8-litre ECOTEC Inline 4, which generates 138-horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a standard 5-speed manual transmission, buyers can also select the 6-speed automatic with overdrive, which is optional on the first two trims. The front-wheel drive configuration is also standard on all sedan models, and the 1.8L requires regular unleaded fuel.

The second engine is available only with the LTZ trim. Consumers looking for that extra boost from the engine may enjoy the 1.4-litre Inline-4 Turbo. Mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive and hill assist, an optional 6-speed automatic is available. The 1.4L turbo engine will produce the same 138-horsepower as the first engine, though it is achievable at a lower rpm. The 148 lb-ft of torque offers an increase of 23 pounds per feet of power when compared to the 1.8L engine.

Inside the subcompact sedan, the 2014 Sonic will provide 2,556 litres of passenger volume, and 422 litres of cargo space. When opting for the hatchback model, passenger volume increases to 2,565 litres, while the trunk volume expands to 538 litres. With the rear seats folded, a total of 1,351 litres are available.

The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic should satisfy the consumer need for a small but fun, affordable and fuel-efficient subcompact car. If you would like to learn more about the Chevrolet Sonic, book a road test at Bruce Chevrolet Buick GMC today! You will not be disappointed.
